In an apartment overlooking the streets of Bed-Stuy, cellist/singer/songwriter/producer Alice Gerlach does computer music. We can hear some urban clangor bleed into Alice’s microphone, tethering her productions to the earthly realm of bedrooms and commuters, but the compositions on her first official EP reach far beyond it. The oscillating synth waves and sweeping cello of “alien farmer,” a new track exclusive to this CD release, mimic the visitation of a Midwestern cornfield by wind-collecting aliens. On the closing track, the heartrending “ghost town,” Alice finds an eerie familiarity in abandoned buildings, in the “whisper of existence” carried by the wind. On the tracks in between, Alice’s approach is at turns playful, contemplative, inviting—but far from homogenous. “the train” and “cry!” are widescreen city love songs, elevated by cello parts that feel like a gust of pure, cold air through subway doors. The winking “voicemail message” of “call me back tomorrow,” intoned over a pulsing minimal techno backdrop, feels like a wry pandemic-era answer to the club-floor come-ons of the likes of Yaeji. Meanwhile, the languidly strummed “lawn mowing maniac” imagines a surreal rural scene of county fairs, languid love, and a White Noise-style disaster painting the sky purple, “but I can’t say that I thought it was that bad.” Alice’s digital pop explorations, buoyed by her soaring cello lines and breathy vocal lilt, feel exceptionally heartfelt and, above all, fun; despite the stylistic terrain covered, this EP's 18 minutes breeze by with an immediate charm that feels like a delightful introductory convo with a new friend.
