On Perpetual Climax Community, the most recent outing by Portland-based electronic experimentalist Deltoid (Bryan Miller), we are invited to consider the introduction—or threat—of manmade sound as a replacement for the soundtrack of the natural world. Terminal Terrestre, Deltoid’s previous 2020 full-length, manipulated field recordings from Ecuador to create a defamiliarized landscape in which the natural, political and musical blur into one; on Climax, our disorientation and wonder come from Deltoid’s ability to mimic the delicate motion of life in an ecological community through inorganic and reproduced sounds. In the absence of direct sonic mimicry, Deltoid’s remarkable ear for textural juxtaposition does the visualizing for us. Skittering breaks, echoing plucks, tape-fried synth bleeps; as soon as this sonic world begins to feel familiar to us as listeners, we are immediately yoked left into a new one. The album’s movement—from the airborne trumpet of “Belly Rub” to the pulsing bioluminescence of “Grisp” to the burbling glitch of “Vertical Stripe”—feels uncannily natural, if not supernatural. As a hyper-representation of our fragile natural world, it’s enough to acutely evoke the terror of feeling our climate shift completely before our eyes. As a piece of ambient electronic music, it’s a delight, a kinetic and truly uncategorizable journey through the sounds we, as computer-wielding humans, can use either to complement or supersede those outside us.
