about

"I took off my well worn jacket and sat down for the evening. When I awoke the jacket was no longer there, only a pile of sand."

Like much of the art that has arisen out of the pandemic, Cori McCullough’s debut EP under the name Soft Change deals—aptly—with a feeling of stasis, of “watching time pass instead of passing time.” Although the four songs comprising this EP are indeed inward and contemplative, McCullough’s true strength is in their ability to connect isolation-fuelled circuitous thought patterns to the outside world. The delicate but stately “Hazy Casualty” draws inspiration from the wildfires that choked Portland in a layer of thick smoke last September, an all-too-suitable analogy for McCullough’s feeling of being unable to move faster than their environment: “Raining ash full of life / Think I, think it all away…” McCullough, who is based in Portland via Los Angeles via Michigan, gravitated toward visual art before turning to music, and the same impressionistic eye for melding textures is discernible in both their oil paintings and songwriting experiments. The songs on Soft Change recall by turns Kath Bloom and Will Oldham, employing a classic guitar-and-voice sonic palette on folk songs that are both delicate and disarmingly direct.
